Die Geschichte von Durmont
The founding of the company Durmont dates back to 1972 when Dr. Fritz Ries established the company under the name PEGULAN. Initially, the factory had two tufting machines, which were put into operation in 1973, as well as three carding machines for the production of needlefelt, carpet rolls, and nonwoven goods. Additionally, there was a coating plant, and the company focused on home textile products with about 50 employees.

After the death of Dr. Fritz Ries in 1977/1978, the Hartberg location was separated from Pegulan, and the company was renamed DURMONT, with Peter Bredt as managing director. The name Durmont is derived from Latin, where „dur“ (hard) and „mont“ (mountain) directly reflect the translation of the location name Hartberg.

The company continued to expand, followed by acquisitions, changes in management, eventually even bankruptcy, further changes in leadership, and the focus increasingly shifted to the automotive industry. Home textiles faded into the background.
Finally, on December 1, 2023, Durmont was acquired by Visscher Caravelle Participaties B.V., with Josef Zettl appointed as the new managing director.
„Through the acquisition by its new owner Visscher Caravelle, Durmont now has access to the global automotive market, as Visscher operates production facilities and sales offices worldwide. This opens up new expansion opportunities, which are already being planned. The new owner ensures a stable future for Durmont, especially following the celebration of its 50th anniversary in 2022.
„Durmont is also making significant efforts in the areas of sustainability and CO₂ reduction. In 2020, a 660 kWp photovoltaic system was put into operation, covering part of the company’s electricity needs. The purchased electricity is verifiably sourced 100% from renewable energy, and the water used in the production process is drawn from the local wastewater treatment plant and purified using a modern filtration system. At the beginning of 2021, a second coating line was also commissioned, based on thermal fiber bonding, which allows for a latex-free structure. In addition, Durmont is actively working on recyclable and bio-based materials.

Durmont is thus a renowned supplier of automotive carpets, known for its high quality standards and strong customer satisfaction. The company is certified according to IATF 16949 and ISO 14001 environmental management standards.
With a clear focus on innovation and sustainability, Durmont GmbH aims to maintain a leading role in the automotive industry in the future. Through continuous investment in modern technologies and employee development, the foundation for long-term success is being laid. Durmont therefore remains not only a reliable partner for its customers, but also an attractive employer that meets future challenges with commitment and foresight.
Our Commitment to Sustainability
Sustainability is a core part of our corporate philosophy. As a major gas consumer, we analyze our processes annually within a framework of continuous improvement and implement measures to enhance efficiency and conserve resources.
A key step in our sustainability journey has been our decision to source 100% of our electricity from renewable energy. This actively contributes to reducing CO₂ emissions and sends a strong signal in support of a sustainable energy future.
Our process water is largely sourced from the local wastewater treatment plant, significantly reducing the use of natural water resources. In addition, we design our carpet structures using mono-materials and optimized production methods to ensure that no harmful CO₂ emissions are generated during manufacturing.
We also place great emphasis on waste management, striving to promote reuse and create sustainable material cycles. Furthermore, we actively encourage our employees to embrace sustainability in everyday life – from growing their own “potato towers” to tending fruit trees. Through these initiatives, we make a meaningful contribution toward a sustainable and environmentally responsible future.
